One Website. Eleven Trusted Nonprofits. Endless Impact.

The Marin Volunteer Tutor & Mentor Initiative brings together 11 respected Marin County nonprofits offering tutoring and mentoring programs—all in one accessible, easy-to-navigate website.

Many adults want to give back—but don’t know where to start. Many nonprofits need volunteers—but struggle to reach them.

The Marin Volunteer Tutor & Mentor Initiative exists to bridge that gap. Created by longtime volunteers and community leaders, our Initiative collates volunteer opportunities so you can focus on what matters most: helping kids thrive.

Our Mission

We are not a formal 501(c)(3). We're simply a group of caring citizens joining to make a difference for our youth by providing information about where to go to join in the effort.

We know that there are many Marinites who are deeply concerned about the education and well-being of our children. Not just our own children and grandchildren, but all of those living in Marin. We've come together to make it easy to become involved in a truly meaningful way. Becoming a volunteer tutor or mentor impacts students in ways far beyond hours spent in a classroom or meeting a mentee for an afternoon snack.

Meet Bob Rosenberg

My first generation American parents grew up poor during the depression. Their only option after graduating from high school was to go to work, something they continued to do long after my sister and I had left the house. Their problem was not of capability but of opportunity.

Sometimes looking across the table at one of my tutees, I see my parents. If we can give these kids more opportunities, there is nothing that they cannot achieve.

Bob created the Marin Volunteer Tutor and Mentor Initiative to encourage and enable Marin's caring citizens to join in the life affirming work of helping the wonderful kids of Marin to succeed educationally and to realize their full potential.

When he’s not tutoring, Bob can often be found walking or biking the trails of Mt. Tam but is happiest when carrying a fly rod on the way to a trout stream.

Notes from Bob’s tutees

It's gratifying to know that what we are doing absolutely makes a difference.

Many of these kids are not reading with another adult at home. I have seen amazing growth in my student's confidence, fluidity and language acquisition as a result of only one hour a week.

Having volunteers in my classroom has been a wonderful experience for my students and I.

They get to work with someone from outside of the school setting who brings with them life experiences, skills and a different point of view to the table. Through the support volunteers provide in my classes I have seen improved student behavior, higher test and grade scores, students attending better in class due to 1:1 support. Currently many of the volunteers working at my school support students in special education and some of our math classes. We even have volunteers supporting students in an after school math tutoring program. If you are reading my statement about our volunteers I would encourage you to sign up and give volunteering in our public schools a try. I believe you will find the experience rewarding.
